Green Lane/Belmont Ave Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Overview

The Green Lane/Belmont Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project will restore the structure to a condition that can ensure a long service life. Funding for this project is provided by the Federal Highway Administration, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, City of Philadelphia Department of Streets, and Montgomery County.

The 7-span concrete arch bridge is a nearly 100-year-old vital connection linking Manayunk in Philadelphia with Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County. It spans the Schuylkill River, Norfolk Southern Railroad, Manayunk Canal, and adjacent walking and biking trails. This bridge opened to traffic in 1928 and has historic significance as a concrete arch bridge and as part of the Manayunk Main Street Historic District.

Over time, the bridge has experienced significant wear with parts of it deteriorating. It's crucial to repair it to ensure safety and usability for everyone.

The Project Area presents the bridge in context with other related and connected transportation features, including trails.

The Fast Facts document provides additional details about the Green Lane/Belmont Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation project.

The Project Timeline lists major project milestones throughout the conceptual, preliminary design, final design, and construction phases (2023 to 2030).

Current Structure Conditions illustrates the deterioration to certain members of the bridge that were discovered during the various inspections.

The Green Lane/Belmont Avenue Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places (part of the Manayunk Main Street Historic District). As such, the Historic Features Affect Design Alternatives presents some of the historic features and information on the NEPA Environmental Clearance process including Section 106 requirements that could affect the selected alternative.

Potential Improvements

Future Bridge Lane Configuration presents the roadway lane configuration including the intersections on either end of the bridge. As shown, mid-span there are two striped lanes in each direction.

Potential Bridge Improvements under both Alternatives presents the base improvements to the bridge superstructure, including replacing the entire deck, below-deck cross-walls, and repairing piers as well as the roadway, including a shared use path, enhanced connections to trails, upgraded traffic signals, pavement markings and signs.

This Cross Section Comparison presents the Existing and Alternatives 1 and 2.

This rendering of the Alternative 2 roadway illustrates a perspective view of the shared use path (SUP) and roadway looking toward Manayunk. It illustrates the four travel lanes and that the SUP is raised from the roadway surface.

What is the Difference presents the difference between Alternatives 1 and 2 for five (5) high level characteristics.

Outreach

Stakeholder and community outreach is ongoing.

Public input is an important part of the evaluation process as part of the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) regulations. There are multiple factors and multiple agencies involved with the evaluation and selection of the alternative that will advance to design and construction.

The Stakeholder Committee is comprised of local community organization leaders, public officials, local business representatives, relevant City Departments, Montgomery County, PennDOT, and SEPTA. Here is a complete list of member organizations.
